Expertise:

Employment

James qualified as a solicitor in 1997 and specialises in employment law. He advises a wide range of clients from large multi-national companies to senior executives.

James has spent many years developing close relationships with clients, and regularly advises on all aspects of employment law. These include "day-to-day" issues such as disciplinaries and sickness at work to more stand-alone and discrete matters such as collective consultation on redundancies and high value employment tribunal and high court cases.

James has particular expertise and experience in restrictive covenants and employee competition, as well as the employment aspects of business sales and staff transfers (including the regulations governing transfers of undertakings in the UK).

James has particular sector experience in the financial services arena, and regularly advises FSA-regulated corporations and senior individuals on employment law issues.

Highlights include:

• advising an asset management business on the recruitment of a large team of senior employees from a rival;
• defending two senior fund managers against injunction proceedings in relation to alleged breaches of employment and post-employment duties;
• defending a brokerage business against whistleblowing and bonus claims;
• advising a logistics business on the loss of a client contract and the resulting TUPE transfer of over 300 staff in 13 countries to the subsequent service provider;
• advising on the closure of a UK manufacturing plant and transfer of its business abroad.

James is also respected for his work for senior individuals in relation to the negotiation and termination of employment contracts. James has successfully negotiated for his clients with employers and prospective employers in many different business sectors including some of the largest global banks and financial services institutions.

James is a member of the Employment Lawyers Association. He has been quoted in the Times and Financial Times and many other publications on topical employment law issues.
